A 496 big block engine. Hooker headers. Merlin heads. A Demon carburetor. With a heart of 550 horses under the hood, this sleeping 1982 Chevy Silverado was about to set fire to the streets of Spokane! But the heat proved lethal.
November 2001
It was a dark and stormy night. The old Chevy rumbled proudly through the blackened streets, and all was good in my world with another job well done. Then suddenly, a roll of thunder cracked and ...lightning filled...the engine compartment?
My oily glow faded. In a single electrical flash, the heart of a Chevy champion seized and 550 mighty horses sputtered and slowed to an Elmer's glue pace. The problem? Burnt ignition wires resulting in misfiring, electrical arcing, and a whole lot of horse down the dog food bag.
The following weeks left my head half bald and my ear fused to the phone. Boot protectors, header wrap, ceramic spark plug wire tips…they all ended up in smoke-under the hood, that is. What's a good old American grease monkey to do? The only thing we can do: bitch to our wives about it.
Well, leave it to my wife to spoil any grown man's temper tantrum. I came storming through the door one evening lathered up and drenched in rage.
"ALL THAT WORK, ALL THAT MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN, AND ALL BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING OUT THERE TO STOP THE F!#*!/*#ING IGNITION WIRES FROM BURNING UP!" And just as profanity began dripping steadily from my tongue, the little wife kills my roll in a single, casually delivered phrase: "Sounds like the opportunity for an invention."And that, my friends, was the SparkArm™ moment of conception.
